There's really not much to do on the post where leadership highly encourages everyone to get out on off days whenever they can. Our vehicles were never properly maintained. We did a lot more weapons training when I first came on board but didn't handle explosives as an engineer until a year after. Sometimes in the field, we spent more time sitting around than actual training. A lot of days we spent even more time cleaning and organizing connex containers for whatever reason. There were days my unit was so bored that they kept throwing us in the motor pool just to find something to do. Barracks inspections are supposed to be a once-a-week type of deal but sometimes leaders will pop in out of complete boredom. If you're not on a leader's favorite list you get unlimited corrective training sessions. I've seen lazy and not-so-smart soldiers easily get promoted. Unfortunately, my leadership believed that having high PT scores will get you promoted quicker as well as being on a favorite list. My leadership came and go through new soldiers' processing while others were headed out through transfers or end-of-contracts. I served with an engineer unit attached closely with Infantry and Cav Scout units. Fort Drum wasn't my first choice but was thrown here by orders. If you love heavy rainstorms and fat snow that will add extra weight then this is the place for you. After PT you get an hour or 90 minutes depending on the duty station to - more. If I could do it you can, and I'm one of the laziest people you will meet. I lived off of chicken nuggets and Takis for 6 years, and I could do it even after being crippled. PT is cake if you are willing to not be lazy, and you take care of your body. What is a typical day like for you at the company? On the other hand you can end up with the most boot hooah ncos who brown nosed their way up the chain, that will treat you like a robot and not respect you or your person time. It's a hit or miss honestly, you'll either have amazing leadership that understands we are humans and need time to recover physically and mentally, after performing strenuous training or activities. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Hurry and wait, you will wait for hours, to go somewhere else just to wait for more hours. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Oh and free college, trade school or training for whatever your MOS translates to in the civilian life. You'll make amazing friends and get to travel the world which is honestly incredible. Have to be able to be talked to like a child whether you know what you're doing or not. The pay is pretty good considering it's easy to save for a home, if you're smart with your money and don't do anything dumb. It's an easy job, the only negatives are the Hooah leaderships inability to understand we aren't robots, we are humans and this job will cripple you either mentally or physically.
